things you should do more often

1. holding doors open for other people — not, out of your way in your face — just “i see you there three seconds behind me, and i’m going to open this wide enough that it doesn’t shut at the exact moment you reach it.”
2. responding when someone in a service position says “have a good day!” or thanks you for something — and not just a one word response, either. give them something genuine. have a chat.
3. saying thank you and please and how are you.
4. smiling. now, again, not walking around smiling all the time — but if you make eye contact with a stranger, give them a little smile action. acknowledge one another.
5. say thank you anytime someone gives you time out of their day. every single time. even if you hated the play date or the activities, even if you fell asleep, even if they were grumpy, even if they .kept waffeling on. almost every single person could be doing something else, but instead they chose to spend the time with you. make it worth their while.
